About Bernard von Bothmer

Bernard von Bothmer serves both the University of San Francisco as an Adjunct Professor and Dominican University of California as an Adjunct Professor as well. He has taught undergraduate classes, graduate seminars, and lifelong learning courses. A presenter of scholarly lectures and the author of articles published in academic journals, Bernard von Bothmer is the author of Framing the Sixties: The Use and Abuse of a Decade from Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush. Focusing on presidencies over the past 30 years, Framing the Sixties examines the politics of the office up to the present. Through extensive research and interviews, Bernard von Bothmer demonstrates how each President molded the memory of the 1960s to fit his own purpose, often interpreting the same information differently. Using the legacies of John F. Kennedy, the Civil Rights movement, Lyndon B. Johnson, Woodstock, and Vietnam, Bernard von Bothmer examines the importance of this decade for politicians across the political spectrum. The American Chronicle remarked that the book was “a particularly useful resource to students of history, political science, and communications studies. Professor Alexander Bloom of Wheaton College, an authority on American culture and politics, wrote of Bernard von Bothmer in The Journal of American History: His research has been prodigious; he combed every presidential library and countless periodicals, and he interviewed just about everyone. Employing the same painstaking methods, Bernard von Bothmer maintains research interests in the Civil War and Reconstruction periods, the Progressive Era from the 1890s to the 1920s through World War II, the U.S. during the 1960s and beyond, and U.S. political history. Bernard von Bothmer'€™s presentations have addressed a number of historical topics, such as the Vietnam War, the German memory of World War II, and the politics of historical memory as it related to the Smithsonian Institution's Enola Gay exhibit. Bernard von Bothmer has also delivered lectures on American political memory and the religious beliefs of Abraham Lincoln. In addition, Bernard von Bothmer participated in several radio interviews and book signings for Framing the Sixties, published in 2010 by the University of Massachusetts Press.
